The vision of Excelsior Orthopaedics began in 1996, but the history of our group is much deeper. Excelsior Orthopaedics, LLP was officially formed in 2002 from the merger of Western New York Orthopaedic Group and Amherst-Tonawanda Orthopaedics.
Western New York Orthopaedic Group has history which dates back to 1968. Excelsior Orthopaedics, Dr. Collard and the late Dr. Bertola, were both instrumental in the development and later merger of Western New York Orthopaedic Group and Amherst-Tonawanda Orthopaedics which resulted in the formation of Excelsior Orthopaedics, LLP.
Western New York Orthopaedic Group offered the WNY community orthopaedic care for over 45 years. From an early age this group was progressive, being the first orthopaedic group in Buffalo, NY to offer on-site x-ray for patients. Dr. Rycyna and Dr. Shields, both current members of Excelsior Orthopaedics, joined Western New York Orthopaedic Group for a short time before branching off to form Amherst-Tonawanda Orthopaedic Group. Western New York Orthopaedic Group and Amherst-Tonawanda Orthopaedics serviced the WNY community proudly, providing superior orthopaedic care to patients.
As a result of advances in medical technology, rising hospital costs and insurance changes looming, both groups recognized the need to offer more comprehensive and collaborative care to patients with orthopaedic or sports medicine needs. Additionally, both groups realized that together they possessed greater power to negotiate with health insurance companies, gain economies of scale and purchasing power which would enable the group to offer more services, such as advanced onsite imaging and physical therapy facilities. In 1996 both groups began discussions about the possible merger and development of a state-of-the-art facility to provide the highest quality care for orthopaedic and sports medicine.
Dr. James Slough and Dr. Paul Paterson, both members of the Western New York Orthopaedic Group quickly recognized the synergistic opportunity to join forces and actively worked to create the original Excelsior Orthopaedics team which consisted of: Dr. Collard, Dr. Bertola, Dr. Shields, Dr. Rycyna, Dr. Slough, Dr. Paterson, Dr. Daye and Dr. Stoeckl.
While talks continued among the respected groups and others from the WNY orthopaedic community both groups continued their growth and progressive mind set. In March of 1998, Dr. Slough was successful in acquiring a certificate of need which allowed Western New York Orthopaedic Group to offer in-office surgeries. In 2000 the Western New York Orthopaedic Group was approved to move forward with developing an ambulatory surgery center, which offered one operating room that has evolved to be the Buffalo Surgery Center.
In 2002 Excelsior Orthopaedics, LLP was officially formed and represented the merge of Western New York Orthopaedic Group and Amherst-Tonawanda Orthopaedic Group. At the time the group consisted of approximately 40 staff members and eight orthopaedic surgeons. The new group broke ground on its new medical campus located at 3925 Sheridan Drive, Amherst New York 14226. The new 62,500 sq. foot facility offers 32 exam rooms, business offices, a 10,000 sq.foot state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center (Buffalo Surgery Center) with three operating rooms, MRI, digital X-ray, and a 10,000 sq. foot physical and occupational therapy facility with state-of-the-art equipment and half-size, regulation basketball court for rehabilitation all under one roof. Additionally, the new facility offers conference space for continuing education, digital video to each surgery suit, and a high tech lighting system to track patients through their care.
Excelsior Orthopaedics, LLP Welcomes the Hand Center of WNY:
The Hand Center was founded in January 1986 through organized efforts of Millard Fillmore Hospital, University at Buffalo, and top Hand Surgeons from the WNY region.
Clayton A. Peimer, MD led the formation of the Hand Center here in Buffalo as he realized a growing demand for specialized hand services in the Greater Buffalo Area. The three organizations led by Clayton A. Peimer, MD designed a model based on principles established by military hand centers in the United States during World War II. Health care professionals received intensive training in the special techniques required to care for servicemen injured in battle. The Hand Center team training focused on three major areas: Patient Care, Education and Research.
In 1989 the Hand Center formed a hand fellowship and received ACGME Accreditation. Over the next 25 years, in addition to their original location at Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital in Buffalo, they expanded their services to Amherst, Orchard Park and Niagara Falls. With the closure of Millard Fillmore Gates Circle in 2012, the group needed to identify a new partner which shared in their progressive commitment to patient care, continuing education and research while allowing the group to stay committed to specialized hand care.
In July 2011 the Hand Center of WNY signed a letter of intent to merge with Excelsior Orthopaedics, LLP to become part of a larger multi-specialty group. This merger allowed Excelsior Orthopaedics to offer additional specialty services to current and new patients, expand geographically, retain and recruit new physicians and surgeons, better measure and improve medical outcomes, and broaden the educational experience of its fellows and residents. It also provided the ability to further develop a niche specialty while continuing to provide excellent patient care resulting in a strong future and stable employment outlook. The original Hand Center team that joined Excelsior Orthopaedics in January 2012 included: Dr. Moy, Dr. Kelly, Dr. McGrath, Dr. Wheeler and Dr. Cowan.
