A group of doctors and therapists from Excelsior Orthopaedics in Williamsville are reaching out to the community with their knowledge and expertise.

Orthopaedic injuries like hand, knee, and shoulder problems, are among the most common. That's especially true when talking about young athletes. So the pros at excelsior are inviting local coaches from various high schools to be trained on ways to prevent injuries - and treat them.

"A lot of us don't have background in complete first aid and athletic training."

Stretching techniques and injury treatment are the focus.

Mark Simon of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute says, "The injury prevention and rehabilitation have been extremely important and beneficial to us to get our guys ready to play pre-season. Then when they do come across injuries, to get them back in the line-up as quick as possible."

And to take their community out-reach mission one step further, Orthopaedic surgeons at Excelsior are practicing "Telemedicine," It enables emergency doctors, like dr. David Ellis of ECMC to consult with Orthopaedic specialists when patients with specific injuries come through
the emergency room doors.

Dr. Paul Paterson, an Orthopaedic surgeon, says, “That old adage a picture's worth a thousand words - it's probably worth a lot more than that. Being able to see the nature of an injury provides me a lot more information as to what I have to do next."

And Dr. Paterson says Telemedicine is also providing patients with better care by enabling a more accurate diagnosis process - faster than ever before.
