Evaluation/Treatment of Orthopaedic Injuries

Upon evaluation, your physician will make recommendations regarding the treatment plan that best suits your diagnosis.

Treatment of your orthopaedic injury may involve stretching or strengthening exercises, medication, or possibly surgery. You and your doctor will discuss the options available for your specific diagnosis.

Orthopaedic Surgery

If surgery is necessary, the physicians of Excelsior Orthopaedics will discuss the surgical procedure with you thoroughly. Our surgeons specialize in knee, shoulder, hand, foot, and hip surgery. In addition, our surgeons perform a majority of their surgeries arthroscopically, by placing a small incision and using delicate instruments to make the repairs.

A leader in orthopaedic innovations, Excelsior Medical Campus houses western New York's only on-site orthopaedic surgery center. This surgical area has three ambulatory surgical suites constructed to New York State Standards of Construction for Diagnostic Treatment Centers of the State Hospital Code.

Buffalo Surgery Center's three operating room surgical area is designed to accommodate many types of hand, foot, and extremity surgeries. The operating rooms are equipped for arthroscopic surgery cases, with two flat panel monitors in the operating room area. The surgical suites are fully equipped operating rooms capable of accommodating many orthopaedic cases in a single day. They also have state-of-the-art arthroscopic equipment, and the group is an investigational site for developing, testing, and improving surgical equipment. The surgical facility also includes a fully equipped recovery room and rooms for cleaning and sterilizing equipment.

Independent Medical Exams (IMEs)

Independent Medical Exams are medical exams performed by physicians in order to render an independent opinion in worker's compensation and no-fault cases.

Worker's Compensation Evaluation

In New York State, Worker's Compensation cases are handled through the Worker's Compensation Board. In 1994, the State of New York Worker's Compensation Board published its Medical Guidelines memorandum. Information provided below is extracted from this memorandum to provide you with a better of understanding of worker's compensation law in New York State. Worker's compensation cases are determined by Worker's Compensation Law Judges, subject to the State of New York Worker's Compensation Board's review, from medical evidence provided from objective health providers. Health providers may include your own physician, your insurance carrier's physician, or a supervising board physician from the State of New York. It is the medical examiner's responsibility to provide objective and detailed medical evidence for the Worker Compensation Law Judge to make a final decision. WCL Judges are required to follow medical guidelines in determining all worker's compensation cases. Upon specific examination and reports from the medical examiner, a WCL Judge must determine the type of disability under the Worker's Compensation Law. The four categories of disability in worker's compensation include temporary total disability, permanent total disability, temporary partial disability, or permanent partial disability.

After completion of a final evaluation from a Board physician, the WCL judge may award a claimant a scheduled award or a nonscheduled award. A scheduled award results from a specific permanent impairment, and a nonscheduled award results from continuing partial or total disability.

Worker's Compensation Law is complex, yet provides objective determination of a claimant's case through specific medical evaluation. We have attempted to provide you with an overview of worker's compensation, as described by the State of New York Worker's Compensation Board in 1994. To obtain more information about worker's compensation please contact us, or the State of New York Worker's Compensation Board.
