Dr. Peter E. Shields

Dr. Shields graduated from Canisius College and received a medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine, where he did his residency in orthopaedics. His areas of specialization are in hip and knee replacement and knee & shoulder arthroscopy, and rotator cuff surgery.

Dr. Shields has been a pioneer in WNY in the use of surgeon-controlled robotic surgery for total hip replacement, total knee replacement and partial knee resurfacing utilizing the RIO Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopaedic System by MAKO (“MAKO Robot”).  Dr. Shields was the first surgeon in WNY to be trained and credentialed to perform Total Hip Replacement procedures using the MAKO Robot, which is owned by Kenmore Mercy Hospital, he has been successfully performing hundreds of these surgeries each year since 2014.  With the advancements in the MAKO Robot technology the robotic system now allows for Total Knee Replacements to be performed.  Dr. Shields has completed extensive training and credentialing and is offering Total Knee Replacement surgery with utilization of the MAKO Robot in addition to Total Hip Replacements and partial knee resurfacing.

The MAKO Robot gives Dr. Shields the ability to achieve a level of precision never before possible.  Ultimately, that translates into better outcomes for patients, both near and long term  – allowing them to get back to doing the things they want and need to do.

Since 2007, Dr. Shields has been named to the Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. Top Doctor in America List.
