About Dr. Shields
Dr. Shields is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon who became the first surgeon in WNY to be trained in robotic hip replacements with the Mako Robotic System, and one of only a few performing robotic knee replacements. He brings an intense curiosity to his job, which is what drew him to medicine in the first place. Dr. Shields understands that decisions about orthopaedic treatment are often life-altering, and he views himself as a partner in your care. His extensive experience combined with his commitment to constant learning enables Dr. Shields to be a valuable guide in your care.
As a child, Dr. Shields had dreams of being a professional baseball or football player. These days, he’s more likely to be playing golf, skiing, or sailing. He and his wife raised three children, now grown and living fulfilling lives. Dr. Shields has been a lifelong athlete and sports fan, and grew up rooting for the Buffalo Bills. He enjoys any activity that gets him outside and keeps him moving, and his perpetual curiosity means he’s always developing new interests.
How are robotic surgical procedures changing the field?
“Robotic procedures are very accurate, a lot more accurate than can be achieved by eye. We can balance one side of the body to the other. We can map both sides of the body, and make the injured side a mirror image to the non-injured side. The robot is more dependable, freeing you up to use all your senses during the surgery. You can plan in advance, so you have a plan A, B and C. The robot can tell you the best route. I believe it’s the future of medicine.”
What do you want people to know about you?
“I love my wife, and I love my children. They complete me. They know that, but I want the world to know that, too.”
