Things to do as a New Runner

Date: June 5, 2014 Category: Uncategorized

If you’re new to running, you are probably excited to get out on the road and get in shape. But, don’t be too hasty, because you’ll want to make sure that you’re doing things right if you want to stick with it.

So, what do you need to know and do as a new runner?

Get Running Shoes

The correct equipment makes all the difference – so wear running shoes when running. Most shoe stores will even help you to find a pair that fit your feet specifically, offering perfect support as you run.

Take it slow at first

You have to run at your level of fitness. Even if you’re relatively lightweight, your heart and lungs might not agree. Take it slow and don’t overexert as you run. Also, don’t feel that you need to begin at a two mile run. Start at a distance that is relatively easy and increase the distance by about 10% every week.

Don’t run every day

While cardio training differs from weight training, and might even cause less strain on your body, you still need to give it a rest. Make sure to include rest days in your routine so that your body can build new muscle, recovering from your sessions.

Stop if you’re in pain

Lastly, make sure to stop running and rest immediately if you’re in pain. Pushing through the pain sounds noble, but it can lead to serious injury, deterring you from continuing with your running program. Whether it’s knee pain or an intense cramp, get home, rest and have a nutritious meal.
