Abstract: A New Way to Care for Young Brains

Date: March 3, 2014 Category: Uncategorized

This is a very interesting and informative article about a phenomenon that is spreading across the country – the opening of medical clinics specifically for the diagnosis and treatment of concussions sustained by young athletes.

This trend is clearly in response to the heightened concerns about concussions, which can be traced to the very high profile cases of professional athletes, most notably pro football players who have experienced significant physical and mental problems that are being tied to the multiple concussions they sustained during their playing careers.  Parents whose children participate in contact sports are becoming increasingly concerned and cautious about concussions and are proactively seeking the help and advice of medical professionals to ensure the proper diagnosis and treatment of their children.

Yet despite the greater levels of awareness, the article points out that even within the medical community, there is still much that is not completely understood about concussions and how the brain responds to them.

Excelsior Orthoapedics established the first sports concussion center in Western New York in 2012.  Led by Dr. Jason Matuszak and Dr. Todd Lorenc, the Sports Concussion Team at Excelsior have significant expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related concussions, including the development of an appropriate return to play program for each athlete.
