Balanced Nutrition of WNY joins Excelsior Orthopaedics

Date: October 1, 2020 Category: Uncategorized
Balanced Nutrition of WNY, a nutrition counseling service for individuals and organizations has joined Excelsior Orthopaedics, making their services more readily available to Excelsior patients and others across the area.

Founded in 2010 by owner Melinda Yoder, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist (CDN, Nutrition of WNY has as its stated mission the “improvement of the health, well-being, and performance of individuals and the greater community through a variety of nutrition resources in a relaxed, non-judgemental, supportive, creative, and fun environment.”

The team at Balanced Nutrition of WNY will now deliver these services under the Excelsior Orthopaedics brand, and on January 6, 2020 they moved from their original facility at 350 Alberta Drive in Amherst to the Excelsior Medical Campus in Amherst – specifically to 3915 Sheridan Drive, the building that formerly housed the WNY Breast Health Center.

“We’re very excited to join the Excelsior Orthopaedics team,” Yoder said.  “The connection between good nutrition and the health of our muscles, bones and joints is so critical, and I admire the physicians at Excelsior for being proactive in making nutrition counseling services seamlessly available to their patients.  Bringing these services into their practice – literally, under one roof – is a very progressive step.”

There is a growing body of medical literature that demonstrates the role that nutrition and maintaining a healthy weight plays in improving outcomes of surgical and non-surgical treatments for virtually all orthopaedic conditions – and in avoiding these conditions in the first place.

“We see it all the time,” said Nicholas Violante, DO, a surgeon at Excelsior who specializes in hip & knee replacements.  “Patients who are eating right and maintaining a healthy weight are much more likely to have successful outcomes with joint replacement surgery than those who don’t.  Their recovery time is quicker, their pain is less and the new joint will work for them for a longer period of time.”

Providing dietary/nutrition counseling to proactively prepare patients for the best possible surgical outcomes is certainly part of what Excelsior’s Balanced Nutrition team will now be doing, but that’s not all.  They will also be collaborating with Excelsior’s Athletic Trainers and Sports Performance specialists to develop and implement nutrition and general wellness programs for local high school and college athletes to optimize sports performance and prevent injuries.  In addition, Excelsior plans to rollout wellness programs to support the efforts of local businesses and organizations seeking to maintain the health and wellness of their employees.

“We are very happy to welcome Melinda and the Balanced Nutrition of WNY team to Excelsior,”  said David Uba, CEO of Excelsior Orthopaedics.  “We’re excited about what they’ll be able to do for our patients.  There isn’t enough focus on the role that proper nutrition plays in avoiding orthopaedic conditions and treating them successfully.  By bringing the expertise of the Balanced Nutrition team to bear for our patients, we’re committed to changing that and helping more Western New Yorkers get and stay well.”
