About Dr. Stoeckl
Dr. Stoeckl is a board certified, Harvard fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist who focuses on outpatient knee replacements and arthroscopic surgeries on the shoulder and knee. Dr. Stoeckl also serves at the President of the Board of Excelsior Orthopaedics. His philosophy on health care is to try to help people figure out what’s going on, explain the problem in a way that’s easy to understand, and deliver care in a non-intimidating manner. He works with patients to develop a successful plan - there are always options for treatment, and aggressive isn’t always better.
When he’s not working. Dr. Stoeckl can be found with his wife, daughters and dog. They’re an active family, spending the winter skiing and the warmer months hiking, water skiing, fishing and boating. As a Buffalo native, Bills and Sabres fan, he’s hesitant to let people know that during his time in Boston, he was a team physician for the New England Patriots and the Boston Bruins.
What would you say to someone experiencing joint pain?
“There are a lot of people living with joint pain on a day-to-day basis. It can be intimidating to seek care for it. At Excelsior, we try to make that interaction less intimidating. Not everybody that sees a surgeon needs to have surgery - we provide the gamut of care, starting with non-surgical modalities. Sometimes the reason to go to the doctor isn’t for treatment, but just to find out what’s the source of your pain.”
If you weren’t a physician, what would you be?
“Disappointed! I feel really lucky to be involved in this profession, and I find it very rewarding and enjoyable. My mom actually worked in health care for an orthopaedic surgeon. My first exposure to the medical profession was through her, so relatively early on I thought about a career in medicine. Maybe I’d be a fishing guide.”
