About Dr. Slough

Dr. Slough is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon who has been practicing for over 30 years, and specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopic procedures. He treats all major areas of the body, in patients of all ages, and is committed to staying up-to-date on the latest advancements in the field. He aims to leave every patient in his care educated about their condition, and often provides abundant supplemental materials to further that understanding. He is a tireless advocate for his patients at the local, state and Federal levels.

As a native of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, an area he describes as a sportsman’s paradise, Dr. Slough prefers outdoor pursuits like fishing, skiing, hiking and hunting. He served as a Lieutenant Commander in the US Naval Reserve, and has served as a physician and educator for many athletic events, programs and orthopaedic associations all over WNY. He serves as the team physician for the Buffalo Bisons, where he’s been involved for the last 29 years. He was the team physician for the Toronto Blue Jays for the 2020 MLB season, when the Blue Jays played their home games in Buffalo. When he's not working, he spends his time with his wife, two children and three grandchildren. He also enjoys music, exercise, and reading and learning about as many topics as possible. Though he entertained dreams of becoming an NBA star or a forest firefighter, he knew from a young age that he wanted to go into medicine.

What drew you to a career in sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery?

"Orthopaedics is the specialty of second chances. When people get injured, we get them better. Orthopaedic surgery is a good mix of intellectual performance and advancing technology. I chose to specialize in sports medicine because of the joy of getting people back to their activities. As an athlete myself, I was always interested in the field. I like the interface between musculoskeletal care and surgery - the way you train, your flexibility, your strength, they all make a difference in your recovery."

Are there any causes that you support?

“The New York State Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons (NYSSOS) advocates for patients, physicians, and musculoskeletal care in the state of New York. I have been on the board for more than 10 years and currently serve as the President through 2020. The Clinical Orthopaedic Society emphasizes the importance of the physical examination, and I have been on the board, a program director, and a past president. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) is our national society advocating for musculoskeletal issues at the Federal and state levels and offers education for orthopaedic surgeons and musculoskeletal care. I have been Chair of the State Orthopaedic Society committee of the Board of Councilors for the AAOS. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has made great strides in the treatment of cystic fibrosis, particularly over the past 10 years, and I and our group have supported this for the last 7 or 8 years. Finally, Catholic Charities - their outreach to help people in need is very important in our community and helps many families and people.
