Patient Feedback
Dr. Kelly
Dr. Kelly is a board certified, fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity care. He treats a wide variety of conditions below the shoulder such as carpal tunnel syndrome, congenital hand conditions and injuries. Dr. Kelly considers his attention to detail a critical component of patient care. He’s committed to the idea of treating patients, not conditions, and tailoring the treatments to the patient’s goals and expectations, based on conversation and taking the time to get to know you.
Outside of work, Dr. Kelly is a ferrier for his children. In between that, he enjoys live theater, wine, classical music, trying new restaurants, and learning about anything and everything. He’s a proud Trekkie and a talented singer. He loves his a life as a professor where he can put his passions for learning, teaching and lecturing to use, but also entertains someday engaging other passions to teach philosophy, history or theology.
What led you to a career in orthopaedics?
“I remember being in 3rd grade and when we went to the school library, I was always gravitating to books about science. I knew I wanted to be a scientist. My mother was a nurse when I was growing up, and by the time I was 10 or 11 I started focusing on medical sciences. My focus in medical school was on being a family doctor. But I had this thirst for as much knowledge as I could get, and I shadowed an orthopaedic surgeon. I realized in orthopaedics, you can fix something and see the results right away. There was a creativity and an art to it that I found appealing.”
Are there any causes that you’re passionate about?
“It’s nice that I can make a difference in my little corner of the world, but there are so many needs around the world. In 1972 I lived through a bad flood, and the Red Cross was very helpful to my family and community, so I’ve supported them for a long time. Going into medicine and seeing the need for medical treatment in so many underserved places around the world, I’m very supportive of Doctors Without Borders. I also support the local arts community.”
