About Dr. Carlson

Dr. Jared Carlson is a board certified, fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity care. When treating patients, he understands that everyone comes in with a unique set of needs. Dr. Carlson believes in educating the patient on all of his or her options to come up with a plan that will achieve exactly what they are seeking - from pain relief to restored mobility.

As a Michigan native turned Buffalo resident, he even sees the beauty in surfing on the Great Lakes in the winter months. Dr. Carlson says the sport has taken him to breathtaking destinations, including Brazil, Taiwan and the Philippines. He also roots on the Buffalo Sabres and makes it a point to check out new restaurants and shops when he is downtown for a game

What was your journey into medicine?

"Originally, I had planned to pursue teaching. I come from a line of teachers with both my mom and dad being teachers. But when I injured my shoulder playing football in high school, it required surgery. That is where the spark first flew. In college, I pursued teaching but always had an interest in human anatomy too. My family and friends encouraged me to pursue medicine. Eventually, I shadowed the surgeon who did my shoulder surgery all those years before. It reignited my passion for orthopaedic surgery and jump started my career path."

What made you choose orthopaedic surgery?

"I appreciate the opportunity to solve a problem from all angles. First, you use your brain to figure it out and then you use your hands to execute on that and ultimately find a solution. It is extremely rewarding to see those skills help patients return to function and happiness in their everyday life. It’s a beautiful thing."
