About Dr. Gambacorta
Dr. Gambacorta is a board certified, fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon with sub specializations in hip arthroscopy, and pediatric and adolescent sports medicine. His journey into sports medicine began in high school, when he did an internship at a local hospital. Dr. Gambacorta is committed to educating and communicating with patients in a way that empowers you to clearly understand your condition and treatment options. He loves taking care of patients, and the reward of taking something that is broken and fixing it, then seeing his patients go on to live pain-free lives.
When Dr. Gambacorta isn’t at work, he’s running around with his wife, three children, and two dogs. He spends his winters skiing and his summers on the water, and loves coaching his children’s sports teams or cheering them on from the sidelines. He was born and raised in the Buffalo area, and after training in several other cities has been back since 2010. In fact, he now operates in the same hospital he was born!
How is pediatric and adolescent sports medicine changing?
“About 30 million kids are involved in athletics in America - each year, about 2 million high school athletes will have a sports related injury, and twice as many under the high school age. Children today are trying to emulate adult athletes, playing year round at higher competition levels, and experiencing overuse injuries that we used to only see in adults. I always encourage parents to make sure their children have periods of rest or play multiple sports to decrease the risk of overuse injuries that are becoming more common at younger ages.”
If you weren’t a physician, what else would you do?
“Once upon a time I thought I might be a scuba diving instructor. I love scuba diving. I’ve done a bunch of deep dives. The coolest dive was seeing a shipwreck at night. There’s a ship called the Oro Verde at the Grand Cayman island that I visited - there’s a lot of bioluminescence and colors at night, and the critters that come out at night are a little different than then ones in daytime.”
