What Is Orthopaedics?

What is Orthopaedics?

Orthopaedics is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on diagnosing, correcting, preventing, and treating deformities in the musculoskeletal system. This system is comprised of the bones, joints, muscles, nerves, skin, ligaments and tendons that allow you move and be active (making injuries in these areas particularly important to treat).

Until the 1890s orthopaedics was devoted solely to the care of children. However, in the years since, it has developed to include patients of all ages. Whether there is a child that needs spinal corrections, a student athlete that requires physical therapy, or an elderly patient with arthritis, orthopaedic practitioners like Excelsior have become the status quo when it comes to receiving care.

What do Orthopedists Do?

Due to the complex nature of the musculoskeletal system, orthopedists must know how to accurately diagnose and treat a wide variety of diseases, conditions and injuries. These can range in severity from arthritis and pulled muscles, to fractures, osteoporosis, bone tumors and much more.

Depending on the needs of the patient at hand, orthopedists will develop unique treatment plans that can include a combination of physical, medical, rehabilitative, or surgical options. While many clinics provide general orthopaedic care, there are also specialists that excel in treating certain areas, which include: hands, feet, spine, sports injuries, knees, hips and more.

Finding a specialist for a particular injury (for example going directly to a “knee specialist” for an ACL tear) helps ensure you are receiving care from a professional who excels in the area you need treatment for.
