High-Risk Sports for ACL Injuries in Buffalo

Date: February 28, 2014 Category: Uncategorized

In the future, we will take a look at ACL injuries as they relate specifically to women in sports. Today though, I thought it might be a good idea to look at some school sports that are specifically popular around the Buffalo region.

Probably the most popular sport in the United States, football is also perhaps the most popular sport in Western New York. With its constant change in speed and direction, the sport puts a lot of strain on the knees. So, if you or your children get involved in football, you’ll want to be aware of any knee pain.

One sport that almost any school has and that occurs year round, to some extent, is cheerleading. Many people write cheerleading off, not considering it a sport at all. However, with the gymnastic aspects to it, often times cheerleaders will see more injuries than athletes in other sports. ACL injuries will often surface, as many of the jumps and poses put excess strain on the ligament.

Other popular WNY sports at a high risk for ACL injury include soccer, basketball, hockey and lacrosse. So, keep a look out for knee pain and take the necessary steps to avoid injury. While an ACL tear can be dealt with by an Excelsior physician, it’s always better to avoid injury in the first place.
