About Dr. Alkhafaji

Dr. Alkhafaji is a board qualified podiatric surgeon who treats an array of podiatric conditions. He believes that the best surgeons know when not to operate, and emphasizes conservative care as a foundational platform. When you see Dr. Alkhafaji, he’ll work hard to earn your trust and create a mutually comfortable, honest environment for each patient. As a physician and surgeon, he aims to understand his patients and the impact that foot or ankle pain or discomfort may be having on their lives.

As someone born and raised in a culturally diverse area of Texas, Dr. Alkhafaji uses his free time to enjoy a wide variety of hobbies. He loves swimming and water sports in the summer, and in winter he hunkers down writing fiction, practicing the viola and supporting the local symphony orchestra. Family has shaped Dr. Alkhafaji’s life in myriad ways - he has a twin brother and a little sister, and his father worked for American Airlines, allowing him to travel the world. Though he’s proud of his Texas roots, he’s eager to put down new roots with the hardworking people of Buffalo.

Why is podiatry so important to people with diabetes?

“Diabetes causes an excess of sugar in the bloodstream which breaks down into a chemical that is harmful to nerves. The places furthest away from your heart are usually most affected, so over time people often can’t feel what diabetes is doing to their feet. Often by the time we see patients, it’s progressed to the point when surgery is needed. Any patient who is diabetic should have a consistent checkup with a podiatrist.”

If you weren’t a doctor, what would you be doing?

“Working at Lowe's! It was my first job. I love the feeling of Lowe's, especially the light section, I just love walking through it. If I could go back I’d just hop departments and learn everything there is to know about home improvement. Naturally, I like to work with my hands and being a handy guy, as well as working with people and providing help fits the bill as far as caretaking. Everyone feels hopeful and inspired when they’re working at Lowes!”
