Excelsior Orthopaedics has expanded its telemedicine offering for existing patients.

Telemedicine (virtual video visit) refers to the practice of caring for patients remotely using live video visits. It allows our physicians to evaluate and manage treatment plans with a patient using technology, such as video chat and smartphones, without the need for an in-person visit.

Most orthopaedic conditions do require diagnostic imaging (x-ray, ultrasound and/or MRI) as well as a physical exam to allow a physician to develop a diagnosis. Because of this, most telemedicine visits are best for established patients who have already completed these tests and have a diagnosis. In some circumstances a telemedicine visits can be offered to a new patient, but this must be discussed with our team when you call to schedule your appointment. This decision will ultimately depend on your type of condition and our physician’s guidance.

Following your telemedicine visit, there are a number of steps that could be taken, depending on your condition. These may include:

  • Sending in prescriptions to your pharmacy
  • Ordering medical imaging such as MRIs and X-rays
  • Referring you to speak with a Physical Therapist
  • Sharing home exercise programs
  • Scheduling an onsite appointment or a follow up telemedicine appointment
  • Does my Insurance cover telemedicine visits?

Most insurances are covering telemedicine visits. Your “cost share” (copay, coinsurance and deductible) will be determined by your insurance carrier. Benefit limitations and coverage guidelines do apply. If you have a question regarding specific plan details, we encourage you to contact your insurance carrier.
