Low Back Pain

Low back pain occurs in the lower portion of the spine. It is typically described as dull and aching rather than burning, stinging, or sharp. This type of pain can be accompanied by mild or severe muscle spasms, limited mobility, aches in the hips and pelvis and/or a shooting sensation down the leg.

Common Causes

  • Facet joint mediated pain
  • Sciatica or Radiculopathy
  • Sacro-illiac joint pain
  • Myofacial pain
  • Back pain after surgery

Common Symptoms

  • Radiating leg pain
  • Back pain worse with activity or walking
  • Back pain worse with sitting
  • Back pain worse with extension

Spinal Stenosis

Lumbar spinal stenosis is common of low back pain and radiating leg pain. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of a section of your spinal canal, putting pressure on your spinal cord and nerve roots. Spinal stenosis is typically caused by normal wear and tear as we age, and is most commonly diagnosed in adults over 60, however symptoms are usually felt years before diagnosis. Less commonly, spinal stenosis is a congenital condition.

Common Causes

  • Increasing age
  • Arthritis
  • Disc degeneration

Common Symptoms

  • Lower back pain and/or sciatica
  • Burning, numbness or tingling in buttocks or legs
  • Foot drop or leg weakness

Adult Scoliosis/Spinal Deformity

Scoliosis is a degenerative curvature of the spine most commonly seen in older adults. It is typically diagnosed over the age of 50 and beyond. It can be a debilitating condition, but treatment can vastly improve a person’s quality of life.

Common Causes

  • Idiopathic, meaning no known exact cause
  • Post Traumatic, meaning following an injury or fracture
  • Inflammatory arthritic conditions

Common Symptoms

  • Spinal Imbalance
  • Mid and low back pain
  • Inability to stand up straight

Spondylolisthesis (Spinal Instability)

Spondylolisthesis, or spinal instability, is a forward slip of one vertebral body on another. This is most commonly seen at the L4-L5 level but can also be seen at the L5-S1. The condition is frequently associated with low back pain and radiating leg pain. It is most often seen in middle-aged women.

Common Causes

  • Repetitive stress/overuse from athletics
  • Hormonal changes with age
  • Genetics

Common Symptoms

  • Low back pain or stiffness, similar to muscle strain
  • Pain that worsens with activity, improves with rest
  • Tingling, numbness or weakness in one or both legs

Pinched Nerve

A pinched nerve, the common term for radiculopathy, is the result of compression of a branch nerve in the neck or low back. Radiculopathy often responds well to non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy or injection therapy. Causes can be normal wear and tear on the spine or sudden injury, such as a herniated disc. Pain usually starts in the neck and travels down the body, making a pinched nerve difficult to ignore.

Common Causes

  • Spondylosis or spinal arthritis
  • Herniated disc
  • Spinal stenosis

Common Symptoms

  • Tingling or pins and needles in the upper or lower extremities
  • Burning or sharp neuropathic pain
  • Weakness in the upper or lower extremities

Cervical Myelopathy

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a compression of the spinal cord in your cervical spine, or neck area. It’s most commonly a result of aging, but sometimes occurs in people under 40 with a predisposition to a narrow spinal canal. Because of the location of your cervical spine, CSM can cause a variety of somewhat vague symptoms due to the interruption of nerve impulses through the spinal canal.

Common Causes

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spinal arthritis or spondylosis
  • Herniated disc

Common Symptoms

  • Tingling, weakness or numbness in arms or hands
  • Imbalance or coordination issues (without vertigo)
  • Loss of fine motor skills
